WE HAD A BABY -- THE JOKE WAS ON US! |

YES!I KNOW some of this is a repeat if you read Larry's blogs........But it's DIFFERENT TOO!Let's start at the very beginning........a very good place to start.?hummmmm.....(sorry, I'm a bit rummy.)?We have a friend, Amy, that Larry mentions quite a bit.?She has a small herd of miniature horses of her own, and just had her first foal a couple of days ago.(See Larry's blog LINK )?The second foal due was at any time, and we ALL knew there would be a problem.?Larry has been running up to her house trying to help her out with supplies from our horsey medical cabinet and giving her advice........plus, trying to get her set up with everything she may possibley need for this upcoming foal ........(The mother of this second foal was one we had sold to her 3 years ago, so we felt some ownership.)For people in the medical field -- Amy's second foal was destined to be an RH Factor baby.(In layman's terms this is called a "Blue Baby", where the blood of the mare and the blood of the foal conflicts.)?This means that if the foal drinks its mother's first milk - the colostrum - it would kill it.?Once the colostrum is gone and regular milk comes in, everything is fine.......SO, we gave Amy a mini muzzle for the newborn.?Nagged at her to get some replacement colostrum - which she finally got from our mutual veterinarian, and warned her that she was in for at least two looooonnnnngggg 48 hours of feeding the newborn, and keeping the mom milked out!(Did I mention that our dear friend, Amy is a 31 year old, auburn haired BLONDE????LOL!?But we love her.)To continue.......At 1 a.m. this morning our phone rang (as expected) and Amy's second foal was born!?A colt!Amy immediately made sure that her new colt was supplemented by the replacement colostrum.(You can see in the photo who he thinks MOM is!)After the phone conversation with her, both Larry and I tried settling back down to bed.......I was assuming that Larry had fallen asleep already, meanwhile I began feeling as if "someone" was lightly pulling the hair from the top of my head.My hand automatically went up to feel, but of course there was nothing there.?This sort of stuff has happened before, so the thought?that the feeling I was experiencing was from "Spirit" crossed my mind, but I shook it off and tried to snuggle down to sleep.......NOT.All of sudden I began smelling a very sweet scent. It was like maple syrup. And it would not go away.I sniffed and sniffed........Along with this, I began thinking we should check on the horses in the barn.....I looked over at Larry to say something, but he seemed to be asleep.(We had one pregnant mare, Nova,? |
(We had one pregnant mare, Nova,?that we had moved over to the barn paddock because she was just developing some signs of being late in her gestation, but had no milk yet.And her foal had not dropped in her belly like they tend to.)I shook off my thoughts of Nova and?eventually slipped into sleep.....Larry told me later this morning that he was still awake when I was and was also?having difficulty getting back to sleep because "something" was bugging him to go out to the barn.?Obviously, he didn't "listen" either and also drifted off......Early this morning Larry made arrangements with Amy to go up to her place to take her kids to school and then feed her new foal so she could get some rest.He drove off as Brianna was getting on her school bus........Moments later, the phone rang..........It was Brianna calling from her bus driver's cell phone!?She was shouting, "MOM, MOM!NOVA HAS HAD HER BABY"The entire school bus full of kids had seen a new little one running outside in the paddock.Good Lord.As I was trying to tangle myself into my barn jacket to run out the door, Larry came back in and asked me what was wrong.?I assumed that Brianna had also called him, so I responded with, "I'm going out to get Nova's foal!Stuuupiiid!"His mouth dropped open.........He has come back to grab the camera he'd forgotten..........Needless to say, he did NOT take off for Amy's as quickly as he planned. Our little mare, Nova (who is of our breeding, BTW) fooled these two breeders of 18 years, and foaled her filly just outside the barn door all by herself. We estimate it happened just about the same time that Amy had her colt.?I would say that either we "lucked out" or SOMEONE WAS WATCHING OVER HER AND US.........What do you think???***UPDATE ***?Our daughter, Brianna, has named the baby.?When she got home from school to see the foal up close and personal, I was informed that the white on the foal's face looked like a Torch.............So - Welcome to the world - "TORCH"!??*** ANOTHER UPDATE*** Just to let everyone know.....BOTH foals are now over 24 hours old and doing well!!!?Last evening Larry went back up to Amy's and stayed to help feed her colt through the night. He's definitely going to need a nap today!?Also, I pulled a second mare to the barn to watch.***THIRD (AND HOPEFULLY FINAL) UPDATE!*** Larry got word this morning......"Lil Man" -- Amy's RH Factor Colt is now nursing directly off MOM!Yay!!!?To read more about it for details check out Amy's Update Blog.LINK |
